Microsoft Inches Toward Virtual Worlds

ImageMicrosoft executive, Daniel Schiappa, has dropped some hints regarding Microsoft’s future plans, and these are looking like they might include the development of a virtual world (i.e. Second Life).

Avatars would first be developed for PCs and eventually move on to the consoles. And of course, mobile devices after that.

Though Microsoft has been brainstorming for a while, it doesn’t seem as if they’ve landed on anything concrete. Schiappa said that, “if a year from now we don’t have anything, then we probably won’t have anything.” So I guess the window for coming up with a genius idea is somewhat limited.

I’m of the camp that believes Microsoft can succeed at whatever they want to succeed at. So if they launch a virtual worlds game, I don’t doubt it’ll be successful. I suppose the question is, what could they come up with that fills a need for virtual world lovers?

Do you think we’ll be seeing a Microsoft virtual world?
