In 2008, Yahoo turned down a Microsoft takeover that had a price tag of more than $47 billion. Although the two sides haven’t had meaningful conversations recently, Microsoft recently said that they are still interested in buying at least a part of Yahoo.

The person behind the comments was Steve Ballmer, the CEO of Microsoft. According to multiple reports, Ballmer is interested in acquiring Yahoo’s search traffic. While Yahoo and Microsoft trail Google in the search engine market, Microsoft continues to believe that they could compete with Google if they get help from Yahoo’s massive search engine traffic.
Despite many millions of dollars spent on their own search engine, Microsoft hasn’t been able to do much to catch up to either Google or Yahoo in the industry. If Ballmer is going to strike a deal with Yahoo, he’ll have to deal with Carol Bartz. Bartz is Yahoo’s new CEO, having replaced Jerry Yang shortly after Yang turned down Microsoft’s offer.
