Microsoft Warns of Security Vulnerability

July 6, 2009 by Stephen Kersey

On Monday, Microsoft release news about a potentially serious security vulnerability for those people still using Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP. The interesting aspect about the timing of the release is that Microsoft doesn’t have a permanent solution for the security vulnerability as of yet.

Hackers have apparently found a weakness in the Microsoft Video ActiveX control. By exploiting this vulnerability in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, hackers can remotely execute code on infected machines.

The most common way to get infected is to click on a spam email that sends you to a website that has been hacked. By simply surfing to that website, hackers can act on this vulnerability.

While there is no permanent solution as of late, Microsoft has suggested disabling ActiveX until the problem is fixed. Microsoft also says they will have a solution to this problem before too much longer.
