The Houston Astros’ newly acquired shortstop Miguel Tejada had some early heroics in the Caribbean Series but it turned out not to be enough. His Cibao Eagles ended the tournament in second place, behind eventual winners Licey Tigers.
Tejada earlier in the tournament became the all-time leading homerun hitter in the Caribbean Series. Even though Tejada’s team lost, the loss came against a team also from Tejada’s home country of the Dominican Republic.
The title for Licey was its tenth in the history of the Caribbean Series. Ramon Ortiz, who pitched in 2007 for both the Minnesota Twins and the Colorado Rockies, was named the Most Valuable Player for the tournament. Licey, which lost only one game in the tournament, beat Tejada’s Cibao 8-2 in the final game of the Caribbean Series to clinch the championship.
