Mission Statements Need Mantras

PenWithNotesI was doing some additional research on mission statements for blogging purposes and came across Guy Kawasaki’s post on Mantras Versus Missions from January, 2006.

It still rings true at the end of 2006 as well.

Guy is much better about describing (and poking fun at) the pretty typical process of creating a Mission Statement compared to my simple explanation that “All Mission Statements are the Same.” (Best Article Link: Dilbert’s Mission Statement Generator)

But he extends the point by saying that we need Mantras – four or five words – to crystallize what is meant by the Mission Statement so the employees can be empowered to do the right thing for the customer. And some good examples that he suggests for companies.

I wish I had found this earlier. You see, all blogs need a good “About” page, describing what the purpose of the blog is to the reader. The About page, in essence, is the Mission Statement for the blog.

Our Mission Statement is about looking at work from a holistic point of view — strategy, delivery, skills of employees, and tools all to make your work life better.

We do that, of course. But, it’s not a mantra that could encapsulate what we do for readers and how to hone our writing.

I sat down and started to think through what our mantra could be here on the blog that would help crystallize the mission statement.

Then I had one of those “DOH!!” moments. Our mantra:

Pimp Your Work.
