Mixed Reviews About Home Business Magazine

I’ve been reading Home Business Magazine for close to a year, and I’ve even been quoted in a cover story, but I can’t help but feel disappointed every time an issue arrives in my mailbox. The thing is, some of the articles are flat-out fantastic. They really, really are. But others, like the cover story in the current issue, are just uber-sketch.
So the article is featured on the cover in like 72-point type. (I didn’t bust out my typesetter’s ruler and measure it, but suffice it to say, it’s giant lettering.) “RAISE $25,000 IN START-UP FUNDING IN 5 DAYS!” Well, golly. That’s a awful lot of gosh-darned money! I do declare, I cannot believe it is possible! Let us find out how.
Okay, well, first you need a business plan. Gee, that makes sense. You should also talk to the bank. Sure! Good idea. But this one really threw me for a loop, and it was a bloody pull quote: “Don’t forget eBay as a way to get some cash.”
You’re kidding, right? Bye-bye, credibility!
Like seriously, some of this stuff is utter crap, but I keep my subscription because some articles, like “Start-Up Success Tips for a Recession,” are actually quite useful, but I see it as applying more to an established business than a start-up. BUT, oddly enough, the author of that article also has a letter to the editor in the same issue.
And speaking of letters to the editor, there are only two that are legitimately letters to the editor. The rest are nonsensical marketing blurbs. I think. I’m not even sure exactly what their respective points are, to be honest.
Like I said in the post title, mixed review. My recommendation would be to hit your local borders and peruse a few issues with notebook in hand before deciding whether to subscribe. That way, you’ll be going in with eyes wide open.
