Monopoly, Ouija, Battleship and More to Become Movies

Universal Pictures and Hasbro (NYSE: HAS) are teaming up to bring several popular board game brands to the big screen. The first film is expected to be released in 2010 or 2011. Rumor has it Monopoly or Ouija will be first.
The list of games expected to be adapted to film includes:
- Monopoly
- Candy Land
- Clue
- Ouija
- Battleship
- Magic
- The Gathering
- Stretch Armstrong
Of course, Clue was already made into a move some 20 years ago, but as we all know, if a brand works, let’s do it again! Last time, that movie left a bit to be desired, so hopefully, it will be better this time around.
What do you think of board game brands extending to movies?
I think the concepts aren’t any different than other movies. For example, the Ouija idea has been done already (although not with the brand name) using other paranormal concepts. Battleship isn’t that different from other “war” movies. I think the brand names will definitely help these movies. People have an emotional attachment to many of these brands from their childhoods, so film adaptations should generate a loud buzz and healthy revenue stream. Let’s just hope the movies are good.
