Montreal Artist Creates “Shared Propulsion Car”
So you want to build your own human-powered car, and want to know if it’s legal? You might want to ask Canadian artist, Michel de Broin.
Unlike the wooden pedal car my friend Howard built 10 years ago, Broin’s hollowed out (and apparently bondo’d) Buick from a distance looks like any other car. It’s more like the Flinstone’s footmobile, run on human power and fitted with bicycle brakes.
After being on display at the Mercer Union Centre for Contemporary Art, fans of Broin’s obviously wanted to take the beauty out for a ride, and after getting the go light from Terry Fox, a legal advisor with the Canadian Automobile Association, that’s exactly what they did. Unfortunately it didn’t stop them from getting a ticket — which they fought in court, and came out victorious.
Justice of the Peace Patrick Marum dismissed the case after hearing evidence from driver, Dean Baldwin, and others.
