If you’re not aware by now, Microsoft has a top-secret little device that’s coming to public presence in just a few days, March 9th to be exact. The actual details aren’t available as of yet, but obviously the rumors are rampant.
Most of the rumors are exactly what the purpose of and type of device “Origami” is going to be. Will it be a music player to take on Apple’s iPod? Or will it be a new version of PDA/phone. The latter option tends to be more interesting given the fact that March 9th is the launch of CeBit, a large telecom and technology trade show.
Obviously it would be very interesting if the device were something to take on the iPod head-to-head. I think for it to be meaningful though it may be needed to be a combination of all: personal entertainment device, personal organizer, and personal communications device.
Microsoft released a statement yesterday confirming that it is behind the site and that the Origami product will be a portable computer running the Windows XP operating system.
Why would this device run Windows XP? That seems like a step backwards, is it just because this thing may launch before Vista? Maybe it’s just because there’s not a mobile version of Vista close to being ready yet? Regardless it does seem to be targeted to the person on the go and still wanting to be entertained and connected at the same time.
To do all that at a low price will be very difficult for Microsoft, Krishna said, who speculated that it will be “a really cool gadget” aimed initially at corporate executives more than at any other group.
He also said it probably will let you do everything your PDA does, along with gaming.
“There are many executives who like to play games,” he said. “They’re looking for someone who is going for a day’s travel and says, ‘I don’t want to lug my laptop with me.’”
Sounds good to me! Now let’s just wait for 6 more days.
