Most builders want to go green

A new survey by the National Association of Home Builders shows that most residential builders and developers are interested in participating in a voluntary green building certification program.

The National Association of Home Builders will launch its National Green Building program in February of next year. The program will link state and local voluntary green building programs with a national online scoring tool for builders and verifiers. The program will also provide a registry of green homes and green builders.

According to the builders association’s survey, 90 percent of residential builders and developers are interested in participating in the program.

This is good news. It shows that builders recognize that green building can be a profitable enterprise for them. And that’s the only way that environmentally friendly construction will truly enter the mainstream: It has to make financial sense for builders and developers.

The National Association of Home Builders survey offers further evidence that we’re moving closer to that day.
