Motivation from Masters: Kurt Vonnegut

If I can’t inspire you, maybe some successful writers can. Today’s Motivation from Masters post features Kurt Vonnegut.

“Who is more to be pitied, a writer bound and gagged by policemen or one living in perfect freedom who has nothing more to say?”

Vonnegut is one of my favorite authors of all time. I don’t always agree with what he has to say, but I respect very much his opinions and ideas. He always makes me think, if nothing else. Here are some other quotes from him that  I love:

“Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before.”

“You had to get everything exactly right or the editors would give you hell.”

“I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can’t see from the center.”

“Here is a lesson in creative writing. First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you’ve been to college.”

“Literature should not disappear up its own asshole, so to speak.”

Very good selection of Vonnegut quotes. I too agree that although I don’t necessarily agree with some of his opinions, I still admire the man for having the balls to say what needed to be said and for saying it uniquely and with hilarity.

I prefer Pynchon to Vonnegut though. :)
