MyFax: A greener alternative to traditional faxing

Sending and receiving faxes produces an alarming amount of accumulated waste. This includes paper, ink cartridges, and old fax machines. Apart from being wasteful, it can also be expensive.  If your company receives fax orders, or sends a lot of faxes to suppliers and vendors, I wouldn’t be surprised if your expenditures for faxing ran a few hundred bucks a month. If you work in a small business, the few hundred bucks matter more.

MyFax seems to be leading the pack to providing an environment-friendly alternative, so I decided to give it a try.

Users can send or receive faxes via their email, mobile device, or the MyFax control panel. You can also create your own local or toll free fax number. My only complaint so far is that they only support North American and European numbers. I hope this changes soon, since many Asian countries are big players in the tech world.

I’ve also received word that MyFax will run a promo called the “MyFax vs. Fax Machine Challenge”. Users can get a free 3-month subscription to MyFax when they donate and old fax machine to recycling charities such as Throwplace and E-cycling Central.

I tried looking for more information about this promo, but couldn’t find it on their site so I tapped into their live chat customer support. The representative was friendly, but he couldn’t find what I needed on the site, either. He asked for my email and told me that he’ll find out what he can and email me later. Based on my unsavory experience with most customer support reps, I was thinking “Yeah, right.”

Sure enough, less than an hour later, I get an email with more info on the promo. They explained that the official contest page wasn’t scheduled for posting until April 18, however, if I wanted to participate now, they’d gladly honor my request. Now that’s customer service.

If your main client base is in the US or Europe, and you do a lot of faxing, this kind of service might be worth it.

Have any of you used MyFax or any other efax service before? What was your experience?

I’ve been a MyFax user for a few years now, and I’ve never had a bad experience with them. Incoming faxes can be delivered to several email addresses and outbound faxes that are sent using email are great.

    Hi Celine,
The offer you mention about 3 months free for recycling your fax is not accessible from our main site, it’s on a special “green” landing page. Here is the URL: http://www.myfax.com/green it’s now up an running.
Thanks so much for all of your kind words about MyFax!

  3. Not only are faxes wasteful, but fax machines are a huge source of electronic e-waste as they become obsolete. Services like MyFax are doing the right thing, in fact, they should offer an incentive like a free month for recycling their fax machine.

    Nice site,

    Josh
