National Dark Sky Week is Going On Now

BadlightI had no idea until I received this press release email that we are in the midst of National Dark Sky Week. According to the email, it is taking place this week and next, from April 17th – 24th.

The idea is to increase awareness of the problem of light pollution and encourage the public to attend star parties (like I need a reason to star party, baby).

National Dark-Sky Week seeks to deter light pollution by encouraging better overall outdoor lighting practices. Simply turning off unnecessary lighting for one week is only a temporary solution. National Dark-Sky Week seeks to educate the public about lighting fixtures that help reduce light pollution by focusing light downward instead of up into the sky.

So get out there people, change light fixtures to ones that get the photons on the ground and out of the sky. Tell your neighbor to turn off his f%&king light, call the city you live in and ask for full cutoff fixtures. Let’s get our skies back, before we have to look up what the Big Dipper looks like on a computer program.
