NES Mods

Only the truly L337 gamer would take the time and put in the effort to mod something so incredibly outdated (yet unceasingly cool) as the original 8-bit Nintendo. While everyone is off happily making their XBox 360 as ugly as possible, Raphael Assenat hauled out his own chunk of gaming history and set about updating it to today’s standards.

Here’s what he did to his NES:

* Remote reset button
* Stereo sound output
* Reprogrammable cartridge
* Disabling the lockout chip
* Blue power led
* Replacing the power supply
* Cartridge cleaning
* Restoring the cartridge connector

I’m not sure whether to say that he had way too much time on his hands, or to applaud him for making the LED a lovely blue colour.

    Hahaha, yaaay! I love people like that, who needs an Xbox360 when you can have a NES with Super Mario? It just can’t be beaten… Maybe that guy can fix mine, it stopped working..

    Ehum.. Wait a second, doesn’t NES means omething like Nintendo Emulator Source, or something? *thinks*

  3. Tor says:

    Maybe he can add wireless controllers for his mod NES.

    Ooooh, NES, how I miss thee. There were many years where I forgot all about the joy of gaming because you just couldn’t be replaced.

    It warms my little heart to see people that keep their old ‘toys’ instead of trading them in for the newest and coolest. For they are not always the best.

    I second the motion for wireless NES controllers, that would be unbelievably cool.

    I’m thrilled to see that people still have fond memories of the original Nintendo and haven’t forgotten how ground breaking it was. Like Karine, there were years of unsatisfying gaming for me when the NES fell from the top console spot.
