New “Avatar” Screenshots

James Cameron’s newest movie, Avatar, won’t be released in theaters until December 18, 2009 but some screenshots from the official video game of the same name have started surfacing on the internet.
The film, starring Sigourney Weaver and Sam Worthington, is about a “band of humans are pitted in a battle against a distant planet’s indigenous population.” I’m going to assume that the game, which is being developed by Ubisoft, will be based on a revised version of this plot.
While details about the game are sparse, Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, revealed: “We’re using 3D technology for Avatar, the game that we are making with James Cameron based on his film that will release later this year, and we’re very excited about it. 3D helps to immerse gamers and gives them the feeling that they are living the adventure of the game – and that is a great thing. It’s definitely a technology that will impress even the most jaded gamer.”
The game’s visual effects look great but I’m not surprised. I think James Cameron will insist that it’s done right. Click on the images below to enlarge:
