New Metroid video shows how unwieldy its “standard” controls are
Metroid Prime 3 is more action-adventure than FPS, you say? Let’s see about that. Have a look at this clip and tell me the action isn’t going to be intense.
FYI: Samus uses the standard control scheme in the video. Notice anything else funny about it? Samus took a lot of hits—more than she should’ve had.
Any idea why?
It’s because of the lock-on feature that comes with standard mode. You lock on an enemy, and you can strafe around said enemy. This means you have to disengage first before you can start dodging attacks from other enemies other than the one you originally locked on to. This feature will get you killed.
So how does one survive Metroid Prime 3? Use the advanced controls, which would be the closest thing to your tried-and-tested FPS mouse movement. Unfortunately, many casual Wii owners might not know this and stick with the standard controls, thinking they’re the best one to go with on the outset.
Maybe Retro should rename standard to “Red Steel” controls.
