New “Star Trek” Soundtrack Now Available

The new Star Trek film, directed by J.J. Abrams hits theaters this Friday but the soundtrack is already available. As you probably know, a film’s soundtrack, especially one as important to fans as this one, is very important. Most people can probably identify music from movies like Star Trek and Star Wars even if
they’ve never seen it.
This time, Abrams tapped Michael Giacchino, with whom he regularly works, to create the score which I’m sure was a daunting task. The recording actually took place at the Sony Scoring Stage where Giacchino directed a 107-piece orchestra and 40-person choir. In case his name sounds familiar, you might recognize his work on previous scores for Alias, Lost, Mission: Impossible III and my two favorites – The Lost World: Jurassic Park and The Incredibles.
I’m not completely sure (and won’t be until I see the movie) but I’ve had a hard time imagining his style working with the Star Trek theme. The preview of the CD sounds pretty good (although, a lot of it seems to end up sounding the same) but you can’t really know until it’s all put together. He did, however, keep the original theme by Alexander Courage for the end credits.
