New Windows Advisor BETA

I just accepted an invitation to participate in a new BETA program. As the name would generally imply, it’s a sort of maintenance and error checking program that continuously runs in the background of Windows.

Here’s Microsoft’s own words about the program:

Windows Advisor is an easy-to-use self-help tool that notifies users about problems on their PCs and helps fix them. Windows Advisor scans users’ PCs continuously, notifies them about important issues, and, when possible, suggests easy fix solutions. The program also provides users with self-help solutions, such as including a 1-click checkup function that enables them to check their PCs whenever they like; tips and tutorials that teach users how to perform certain actions on their PCs; and a toolbox that concentrates the important tools that are found in the operating system into one easy-to-find location.

I’m going to be running this program on my main laptop so I hope I don’t run into issues. For me though, it’s the best way to really test this stuff. I could install the application on my home desktop, but I rarely use that anymore.

I wish this was integrated in with Windows Live OneCare. It seems to me that OneCare performs a similar action. It would be nice if ran together without being a separate application running at the same time. Maybe once it’s released from BETA it will be incorporated back into OneCare as a single application.

I agree. Sounds like something that would fit an AV kit.

But hopefully, this could be available for ALL Windows users (or at least XP SP2 and Vista) for free.

I’m really thinking though that it’s going to be well suited to head straight for Win7 instead. Hopefully it does its tasks right, and isn’t the least bit annoying.

And why does Outlook2007 clear the color categories for items when it archives them?

I signed up for the BETA test as well. I signed up through Microsoft community.

I couldn’t run the PC Checkup – it said I didn’t have internet access when I did, and the other utilities worked fine.

I had to disable the process for the Advisor due to it was interfering with viewing a flash laden web site (www.ihop.com). After removing the process, the site loaded without any problem.

Also, the Diagnose and Repair feature for the wireless connection stated that there was a TCP/IP option that I didn’t need. I haven’t seen that before I installed the Advisor.

Let me know if I can keep the service as manual versus automatic. I’ll post what I find here.
