Next Doom won’t be named Doom IV

Ahh, QuakeCon. It has everything: the nerds, the competitions, the cash, and the id Software games on display. High on gamers’ lists for QuakeCon is the recently announced Doom IV. According to Big Download, this upcoming Doom game won’t necessarily be named Doom IV in the strictest sense.
Id designer Tim Willits said at QuakeCon that the next Doom project would have the Doom title, but it would have a subtitle instead of a Roman numeral. As for what the subtitle is, we have to wait for that one. That probably means id still doesn’t know it yet either.
Why the decision for a subtitle, you ask? Willits explained that the next Doom won’t be a continuation of the Doom III storyline. You mean the Doom games had stories? So what would the next Doom be a continuation of?
Well, there’s no word from id regarding this.
Would the upcoming Doom introduce new gameplay elements to the stagnating FPS genre? We can’t say at this time. Since it won’t be a reimagining of the series like Doom III, I do hope we get more novel ideas.
