NFL Football – Tuesday Rant Detroit Lions (after week 4)

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Lions Management

Bozo Bell CircusTime for the Tuesday rant and it’s a good one. The lovable Detroit Lions dropped a game with St. Louis that was actually exciting. Is this something new in the Matt Millen era? Detroit showed a lot of offensive firepower with Roy Williams dominating with pass receptions and Kevin Jones running with power and some moves. Yeah, he has some moves.

So where is the rant? Oh, that’s easy. Let’s start with Roy Williams… Now Roy is quickly becoming the star on this team. He is a tremendous receiver that apparently likes egg on his face. He has called the offense unstoppable and in the same breath predicted a victory against the Bears. Ouch, offense against the Bears. Just does not work. Roy ate those words and still did not back down saying we would beat the Packers. He ate those words, while calling for Mike Williams to get out of the coaches dog house and play with the starters. So, the coaches did not even play Mike Williams at all. That does not stop Roy. He is calling for Mike to play again?!?

Ok, as unexplainable as Roy is and as hard as it is to stomach that Roy is the Man for this team, it does not stop there. Coach Sarge Marinelli was asked if injuries to cornerback Fernando Bryant (ankle), safety Kenoy Kennedy (foot), linebacker Teddy Lehman (foot) and linebacker Alex Lewis (knee) had some effect on the Lions poor defense. He said “No”. Then went on how they drafted, traded, or just found them at a garage sale, and then coached them, so all the players should be able to play. Now as much as your intrepid author is enamored with the ways of Marinelli, that reply was laughable. Consider that it was Matt Millen at those garage sales.

All is not lost. Marinelli has a plan. He is going to simplify the defense. Huh? That is right. He is going to make it less complicated, so the players can just react and not get caught thinking. Let us hope that reacting leads to tackling. Marinelli has got to be scratching his head over how the Lions team is put together.

Kevin JonesOn a bright note, it looks like Kevin Jones is getting back to how he ran in his rookie season. He is starting to pile up the yards and score the touchdowns. If you watch him, he is hitting the seams and running downhill, two things he did not do last year. He is turning into one of the leagues top backs.

NFL Football Fan Question Who wins out in the end, Marinelli or Millen?
