Since August is all about fiction, and as part of that, I want to help you find ways to make money with the fiction that you write. So, during the next few weeks, I’ll be posting a series called “niche markets.” Each will focus on one kind of fiction and include links to writer’s guidelines for places that publish short fiction and novels. You can see all of the niche market posts here, in case today’s niche isn’t your cup of tea!

Today’s markets are for writers who make things go bump in the night – horror fiction writers:
- Apex Magazine
This magazine publishes horror/thriller tales with a sci-fi twist (must be sf). They publish stories of up to 7,500 words and pay 5 cents per word. This publisher also works with novels, though they aren’t accepting submissions at the moment. Read Apex Magazine guidelines for more information.
- Chiaroscuro
The most important guideline for this webzine is that your fiction be very dark. They accept stories of up to 4,000 words and pay 7 cents per word if published. Read Chiaroscuro guidelines for more information.
- Horror Fiction Magazine
Ok, it isn’t the most original title for a magazine, but they are a paying publication accepting stories of up to 10,000 words in any genre. They also consider horror poetry and artwork. Read Horror Fiction Magazine guidelines for more information.
- Absent Willow Review
This magazine publishes fiction stories of between 2,000 and 8,000 words that fit into the horror, sci-fi, or fantasy genres. They also choose one story every other month to win an editor’s choice prize. Read The Absent Willow Review guidelines for more information.
- Something Wicked
At Something Wicked, they’re looking for horror with “a dash of the supernatural.” They publish stories between 2,000 and 10,000 words long. They’re out of South Africa, so you must have PayPal if you expect payment! Read Something Wicked guidelines for more information.
