Nintendo Revolution Specs

There’s a really interesting article over at IGN Revolution concerning the Revolution’s specs. From the sound of things, it looks like Nintendo had no intention of putting its console into direct competition with the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Instead, they’ve opted to create a console that’s more about affordability than breathtaking specs.

The IGN article reveals:

Developers have clarified the makeup based on officially released Nintendo documentation. Revolution will build on GameCube’s configuration of 24MBs 1T-SRAM and 16MBs D-RAM (40MBs) by adding an addition 64MBs of 1T-SRAM. The result is a supply of memory in Revolution that totals 104MBs. That number does not consider either the 512MBs of allegedly accessible (but hardly ideal) Flash RAM or the Hollywood GPU’s on-board memory, said to be 3MBs by sources.

Revolution’s Broadway CPU, developed by IBM, is an extension of the Gekko CPU in GameCube, according to official Nintendo documentation passed to us by software houses. The Hollywood GPU, meanwhile, is believed to be an extension of the Flipper GPU in GameCube. Since developers have not gone hands-on with the GPU, they can only go on Nintendo documentation, which is limited.

They’ve also stated that the Revolution’s clock rate might be about twice – or a little less than twice – the amount of GameCube’s.

Definitely a risky move for Nintendo, in a time when people desire better specs and more powerful hardware. Its saving grace, however, might just be the fact that it’s not going to be another $300-400 console. In fact, the article goes as far as suggesting that you might get a Revolution for as low as $99. Even at its originally rumored price of $149, it’s a price you can’t beat.

I’d say it’s going to be a fine little addition to my entertainment area.

  1. [...] Even though the Nintendo Revolution is likely not to be the Mr. Graphics Pwnz0r 2006, ATI’s Public Relations Manager for Consumer Products, John Swinimer, says it’s not going to be a heap of junk either. Well, he didn’t say that in so many words, but that’s the sentiment I got. Swinimer says the new ATI card for the Nintendo Revolution will be a console specific model and not a card based off of any of their PC models or their Flipper chipset. [...]
