No MMOs for Wii Now, But Maybe Later

Final Fantasy XI producer, Hiromichi Tanaka, talked about future Square-Enix MMO games at the GDC in Austin, Texas. When the subject of the Wii came up, there wasn’t must positive news for us Wii/MMO lovers. Alas, the console is not quite ready for such games as yet.

“As for Nintendo Wii, it will be pretty difficult if you were to cross-platform for a couple reasons,” Tanaka responded when asked about the possibility of a cross-platform MMO appearing on the console. “One is that Nintendo’s currently not allowing different cross-platform titles, and as you know, the resolution differences make it harder for us to make cross-platform games. Currently we’re not looking at Nintendo Wii as a platform.”

The good news is that an MMO is possible, but it will require that Nintendo make some hardware additions – which, unfortunatey, Nintendo doesn’t seem to have on its immediate to-do list.

I suppose Nintendo is content to leave the MMO genre to the other consoles until such a time as it becomes a necessary addition to the Wii. But it doesn’t seem as if not having an MMO is hurting the Wii sales any. So, I’m guessing an MMO game for the Wii isn’t bound to happen any time soon. Perhaps when the Wii 2 comes out in some distant future.

Until then, I’m pretty happy just playing WoW.
