North Dakota’s Buffalo Marketing Club

Farm marketing may seem like an oxymoron. After all, the market sets the prices of products and few people value the output of one farm over another. Yet, in the face of falling market prices and a challenging economic climate, one group of North Dakota farmers has decided on a proactive approach, forming their own marketing group–the Buffalo Marketing Group.

In Buffalo, located about 40 miles west of Fargo, a group of 15 farmers are using the off season to share ideas and strategize for the future. Now in its eighth season, the group charges each member a $50 annual fee and meets monthly. Recent topics have included the global economy, worldwide weather, handling more of the farm-to-market cycle in-house, and the volatile price of grain.
Agriculture is the largest industry in North Dakota and the state is the United States’ leading producer of barley, sunflower seeds, spring, and durum wheat for processing, and farm-raised turkeys.
