Now in Theaters: “The Proposal”

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds have paired up in The Proposal which actually looks like it could be a great romantic comedy.  She definitely has a good track record for making these types of films and we know that Reynolds can bring humor to almost any movie.  When I first heard about the casting, though, I thought she might seem too old the proposal_1for him (in real life, there is a 12-year difference) but it actually works.

In the movie, Bullock plays Margaret Tate, the executive editor-in-chief of a book publishing company.  From the trailers, she looks like the boss from hell and directs most of her cruelty to her assistant, Andrew Paxton (Reynolds).  Margaret gets quite a shock, however, when she learns that she is at risk of being deported which prompts her to tell the immigration agents that she’s actually getting married to Andrew (who is clearly shocked).  In order to make their romance look more authentic, Margaret agrees to accompany Andrew to his grandmother’s birthday celebration – in Alaska.

There’s a scene in the trailer where both Bullock and Reynolds are naked and, in their frenzied reaction to seeing each other nude, she falls on top of him.  Apparently, it is her first nude scene.  Us Magazine quotes her as saying:  “Sadly, my first and last nude scene got laughs, so I had the proposalto be very secure with that. It was all about choreography. I mean, literally when you read it on the page, you saw it, and then you realized, ‘OK, there is no way to shoot this unless you are buck naked!’ Then I went, ‘Go to the gym, cut out the carbs!’ I’m glad it made people laugh. Shooting it was odd. There are things stuck to areas that generally you don’t have things [stuck to]. I mean, you have things covering [your body], but not stuck to it. And then they got unstuck, and oddly we didn’t care because we were so tired.”

Reynolds chimed in and said: “Yeah, at that point, shame is gone completely. The weirdest part is calling your mom nude on set: ‘Hey, just checking in!’”

Film fact:  In the movie, Margaret is about to be deported because she’s Canadian.  In real life, Bullock is from Washington, DC but her co-star, Reynolds, is actually Canadian (he’s from Vancouver, British Columbia).

I’m really looking forward to seeing this movie.  I’m not usually one to see romantic comedies but this actually looks pretty funny.  Watch the trailer:
