The movie Seven (1995) will be released on Blu-ray tomorrow and I’m sure many people will want to pick up a copy. I can remember almost everything about the first time I saw this movie about a pair of detectives who are hunting down a ritualistic serial killer whose crimes are based on the seven deadly sins.![]()
Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) is about to retire but, before he can leave, he’s paired with the young Detective David Mills (Brad Pitt) who has voluntarily transferred into the precinct. I’m sure Mills regrets the decision when the partners begin investigating some of the most gruesome (and confusing) crimes you can imagine.
The story is very well-crafted and the acting is amazing but, of course, it’s also a very dark film. The action is slow and deliberate and relies minimally on special effects which is fine since the script is strong enough on its own.
The cast is also excellent. In addition to Freeman and Pitt, the film stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Pitt’s wife, Tracy, as well as Kevin Spacey, who had just delivered an incredible performance in The Usual Suspects (which was released about a month before Seven).
If you haven’t seen this movie, I would strongly suggest it. I wouldn’t recommend eating anything while you’re watching it, though.
