President Barack Obama spent a majority of his weekly radio address on Saturday talking about steps he has planned to make saving for retirement an easier task for workers in the United States. According to Obama, about half of workers in the United States don’t have retirement savings account through their job.
Obama discussed how the problems started even prior to the recession.
Said Obama: “The fact is, even before this recession hit, the savings rate was essentially zero, while borrowing had risen and credit card debt had increased. Many were simply struggling to stay afloat as incomes were stagnant (or falling) and jobs were scarce.”
The president also said that the current state of affairs isn’t acceptable in the U.S.
Explained Obama: “We cannot continue on this course. If you work hard and meet your responsibilities, this country is going to honor our collective responsibility to you: to ensure that you can save and secure your retirement.”
