Oh Lindsey, Lindsey, Lindsey…

Beautiful Snowboard Cross (SBX) Princess and Teen Model Lindsey Jacobellis was almost assured of a Gold Medal finish, but fate wouldn’t have it that way.

Just right before the finish line, Lindsey grabbed her board in what many called ‘an attempt to please her fans’ (I strongly disagree), caught an edge, and fell outside the blue lines. By the time she recovered, Norway’s Tanja Frienden, who had been trailing, had already caught up and was feet away from the finish line.

Lindsey’s fall handed the Gold to Frienden.

Just a day ago in the Men’s Snowboard Cross event, Gold Medalist Seth Wescott was trailing Slovakia’s Radoslav Zidek until the second last turn (correct me if I’m wrong), where he muscled his way into the inner line to take the lead away.

This goes to show in the wild, unpredictable, and ‘every-man/woman-for-him/herself‘ sport of Snowboard Cross, nothing is guaranteed until you cross the finish line.

Even though you didn’t win, we still love you very much, Lindsey!!!

  1. [...] I used to be a competitive snowboarder and hold two national titles (1996 USASA Apline Overall & Slalom) so I thought I would offer my perspective. Some have said she wasn’t trying to appease her fans, however I disagree. The maneuver she performed over the next to the last jump is not something productive to snowboard cross competition. It is also something you don’t accidentally do. [...]
