eBaum’s World is known for its humerous content, but today I found something that branding people will love! It’s an image gallery of 20 brand logos showing the old logo design and the new logo design in a retrospective of logos from the past and present.
It’s interesting to look at some of these “past and present” logos next to each other. Some really stand out as marked improvements – more modern and Web 2.0-ish, while others don’t seem to make much sense at all.
Here are several logo redesigns that I like (old logos are on the left and new logos are on the right):

And here is one I don’t like (actually, I don’t like the old or new logo for Animal Planet):

What do you think of these logo redesigns? What do you like or dislike about them?

Why the heck is the “M” laying sideways; is it dead?!? What message could they possibly be trying to convey?
In response to Scott, it looks to me like a bird’s beak? Or maybe an alligator? I take the new logo to give you the feeling that the channel is more daring and “outside of the box”.
Apple’s new design is perfect for the companies transition from nerdy to cool.
I don’t get Safeway’s change, but Federal Express was genius to short the name and change the symbol.
Nice post.
It strikes me the best redesigns (shown on the link in your article) are the ones that add depth and 3D. Yet also stay simple. Like the Apple logo above: out with colour, add depth, a twinkle of a reflection and 3D. Pure class. Zap out the letters/brand name too (and still gain instant recognition) and it shows your logo has entered the league of icons.
