Canadian speedskating star, Mathieu Turcotte, has announced his retirement. At 31 years of age, the three time Olympic medalist has decided to end his career: “After putting a lot of thought into it, I decided to stop skating,” Turcotte said in a release. “I had a wonderful career, but it’s time to move on.”
What’s he going to do with all of his newfound free time? He’s going to work, of course! Turcotte plans to devote his attention to his speedskating boot company, APEX. I think it’s excellent that he’s found a way to be involved with the sport that he loves but in a different capacity.
Turcotte won a gold medal in the relay and a bronze in the 1,000 metres at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics and picked up silver in the relay at the 2006 Turin Games.
The former world champion and his teammates still hold the relay world record.
His retirement will be felt among Canadian Olympic fans but I wish him all the best – Bonne chance et félicitations, Mathieu!
