On A Personal Note – Rob’s Story Part 3

A couple of days ago I began telling Rob’s story. Here is the conclusion for those tracking the story.

Today, I really don’t know alot about what Rob is doing, but I just reconnected with him and he is still working for American Express. He has trained in many different countries and has exceeded me in his career. For that I am elated!

As far as why I shared his story, honestly, I was thinking about him and wondering whatever became of him. Though Rob gets all the credit for his success, I am personally satisfied to know that I had a part in helping him begin his career. He was on my mind, and I thought it might help for some of my readers to hear a successful story. I had the opportunity to coach Rob. He listened, he applied himself, he worked hard and he is successful in his life as a result.

As far as the hiring process I mentioned in Part 2 of this story. Let me share this for any hiring managers who may need some assistance.

When I hired trainers in the course of my career, I always hired new employees using the team that was working for me. I included people in the process so that it was not just my lens, not just my perspective. I also, wanted to teach my team how to interview and hire. I wanted them to be a part of the process.

When I was hiring the trainer position Rob posted for, I had others involved in the process. I had others share their thoughts, ask questions and help in the decision making process. I ultimately made the final decision, but I used the input of others to help me arrive at the best decision.

When I have the opportunity to speak to Rob, I will invite him to join me on my talk radio show. I would like him to share the rest of the story.

Well, I guess the two of you didn’t get married :D

That was a stretch anyway of my wandering imagination. Glad to hear he became so successful though. It’s great when you can be involved with something like that. I used to be a job coach for disabled individuals and a youth advocate for homeless youth (which involved work skill training) and while most credit goes to the individual, it always feels nice to be part of a success story.

  3. Hey Doug – Thanks for visiting. Wait until you hear the rest of the story!

  4. Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for following the story. I am going to be speaking to Rob for the first time in 7 years some time tomorrow. I am hoping he will share the “rest of the story”. Stay tuned, there may be a part 4 to this series of post. Thanks for your interest! Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you!
