Tyler Perry was relatively unknown until the unexpected success of his 2005 film Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Since then, he has released several films featuring the loud and sassy grandmother, Madea, that have performed well at the box office. His latest, Madea Goes To Jail, was released in theaters on February 20, 2009 and grossed $41 million, Perry’s largest opening so far!
As the title of Perry’s first film suggests, Madea has some anger management issues and they end up costing her after a high-speed chase lands her in court. While some people are happy to see Madea behind bars, her family and friends rally around her and give her the support she needs to make it through her stint in jail.
Meanwhile, another storyline between an up-and-coming lawyer and a friend from his past (The Cosby Show’s Keshia Knight Pullam), who has been convicted of prostitution and is trying to stay off drugs, develops and causes problems with his fiancée. Of course, the two plots end up intertwining with Madea watching over the young woman after she is also sent to jail.
As audiences have come to expect with Tyler Perry’s films, you will laugh and cry as you watch the characters navigate their way through life’s ups and downs. Check out the trailer:
