One-Click Window Movement Using Dual-Monitors

October 19, 2007 by Jason Bean

Have I stated recently how addicted I am to working with dual-monitors? Well, if not I am completely addicted to the point I carry a 2nd 19″ LCD with me to most client locations during my work day.

One thing I’ve thought of that I’d like for the operating system to give me when it notices that dual-monitors are available is to move a program window from one monitor to another with one click.

Without much thought, here’s the completely simple solution in my mind:

monitor-move-window

Forgive me of the janky looking buttons above, but it’s just for purpose of example. Since moving a window to a different monitor is similar to a minimize/maximize/close function, I’d think the two (or more) new options that should be available in that space are shown above.

With one-click I could move the window to the new monitor in the same display format as I’m seeing it on the existing monitor.

Does that make sense?

If someone knows of a program that already exists to do this, just let me know.

MultiMon works well for me at work. You can make it show buttons to move windows between monitors.

Oh yeah! That’s exactly what I expected. The virtual taskbar on the 2nd monitor is very nice too!

Nvidia has an option in the nView Desktop Manager under the tab “user interface”. there is a subsection thats titled “title bar options” that switches the window to either monitor in one click. hope this helps!

  1. [...] Deezil responded to my post about wanting more control over the windows when using multiple monitors. He directed me to a free, little application called MultiMon that does exactly! what I wanted and a little more. [...]
