Nick McCormick just started a great new podcast series called Management Tips. Nick’s goal is to talk to managers, leaders, and other insightful folks to offer one good management tip in 5-8 minutes. Nick asked me to be his first guest, and I shared my tip about my best management tip.

My one good management tip: Know yourself. Give it a listen. It’s only 8 minutes of your time to learn one good tip. Know yourself.

Be sure to also bookmark Nick’s one good management tip podcast page. I have no doubt Nick will find many people willing to share insights with him, and if you have a good management tip, leave a comment on one of his posts and who knows…he just may have you on the show!

Last but not least, I’d also encourage you to pick up a copy of Nick’s book Lead Well and Prosper. Nick offers straight talk on management, and his book is an easy read and offers some great insights and confirmation into how you can be a better manager.

Nick McCormick does great insightful work in the leadership field and he does it in his ’spare time’ as he also has a job as a manager! I don’t know how he finds the time to do it. I think this approach – short, sharp ‘one good tip’ in a few minutes – is the way to go for all of us. I read recently that we learn best in small doses – 15 minutes max. Given our crowded, interruptive days, it makes sense to parcel up learning points in this way. Nice one! (As we say in the UK).

  2. Great tip, Phil (and great to hear you again!).

Knowing yourself (i.e. strengths and weaknesses) is such an important step if you want to be a better manager.

I’d like to suggest if you don’t know what your natural strengths are, go and check out Marcus Buckingham – he’s the “Master” when it comes to personal strengths.

  3. Phil – Nick is definitely a remarkable guy, and his short, pithy podcasts will help us all become better managers.

Andrew – I am a HUGE fan of Marcus Buckingham. I just went through his Simply Strengths course. WOW! Powerful stuff!
