Online Ads Up, Offline Ads Down

Ad Spend in First Half of 2007

Online media and offline media are locked in a deadly war for scarce advertising dollars, a war only one can survive. Guess who’s winning.

According to TNS Media Intelligence, while offline ad spending is down in the first half of 2007, online ad spending is up. Way up. Note that TNS counts only online display ads, not online search ads — which means actual online ad spending is even higher than reported.

In case any offline media outlets out there still see online media as “supplemental”, these numbers should serve as a rude awakening. Advertising budgets are not infinite. Either go where the money goes, or go off to die.
