Earlier this week, I published a post about word of mouth marketing projections for 2008, and I thought I’d follow up on that with a post about online advertising projections for 2008.
According to eMarketer, online advertising is expected to grow by 28.5% in 2008 up from 26.8% in 2007. Additionally, spending on paid search advertising is expected to grow by 27.5% in 2008 up from 26.8% in 2007.
Take a look at the table below from eMarketer that outlines their predictions about online advertising spending by format from 2006-2011.

I think one of the most interesting parts of these projections is the expectation that online ad spending growth will peak in 2008. Am I reading the table wrong? Could that be accurate? While I definitely think companies should shift online marketing budgets from advertising to social media and viral marketing initiatives, I can’t imagine that online advertising spending growth will peak this year.
What do you think about these predictions?

The trend makes sense to me and I’d say that is great news for bloggers!
The real question is when are the larger companies going to make real investments online. If you look at the top online spenders, most of them are smaller companies.
The power that the online marketing offers in terms of both targeting and format choices can make it an extremely powerful medium.
