Online, On the Phone and in Person

Your job search must become your passion rather than a chore! Whether your search finds you online, on the phone or in person networking or interviewing – work your job search with passion and creativity.

Online

Years ago when the internet was ramping up and job boards first found their new home, you could sit at your computer and search for jobs, forward an email and be on your way to a new job or career. Many companies at that time responded with a personal email. That quickly evolved to electronic automatic responses. But you could be sure at that time that you were well on your way to at least getting a phone interview.

Today, if you are sitting at your desk, scouring job boards, sending emails and hoping for a response, you will be wasting your time. Gone are the days when sitting at your computer and pushing out 10 – 15 emails to recruiters. This process is obsolete. It is stale, it is old and truly not the best use of your time or computer. Online job searching might better be focused on connecting with people. Networking is an art. There is finesse today in how you network. Networking is not about meeting people for the sake of meeting people. Networking is about intentionally connecting with people. Opening up your network to others and being responsive to those who open their network to you. If you are a business professional, you need to set up a profile on LinkedIn. Once you make that investment (of time), get out their and start connecting with people. Here is a series of post – LinkedIn Review, that will give you some LinkedIn basics>>>

On the Phone

On the phone speaks to phone interviews, contacting organizations that you are interested in working for, setting appointments to meet people. Your phone is the primary tool you will use in your job search. You will set up appointments and phone interviews are here to stay. Practice interviewing over the phone with a friend. Learn to smile and project enthusiasm without feeling the need to speak loudly. You want to speak in a normal conversational voice while communicating who you are and what you bring, or will bring to their organization.

In Person

This is your bread and butter. Whether you are networking or interviewing, your presentation must be on point. You must be credible, you must look the part. If you are looking for a senior level management position, you better look like a senior manager when you show up for that networking appointment or that interview. Be prepared to discuss who you are, your skills, your abilities, your strengths and your areas of weakness. These should roll off your tongue with ease. You don’t have time to grabble for answers to key questions. Preparing for your in person appointments is the most important part of your job search. Your investment in your preparation will be a direct correlation to what you net out of your job search. It is critical that you spend lots of time reviewing job descriptions, reviewing your previous work experience, working on how you can present your skills and abilities so that your interviews become discussions and opportunities to connect and build relationships with the hiring managers.

Online, on the phone or in person, each of these three venues will move you closer to the job offer you are looking for. Be ready!
