Well, one problem of Office 2004, if you did not upgrade it yet, is that it does not allow you to open and edit files with the .docx extension. This is natively not supported by Office 2004.

As you may know, .docx is the file document format for Office 2008. But, the solution is out already and all you have to do is upgrade your Office 2004 by installing Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.0 Update Package. This basically delivers several improvements to enhance stability and compatibility with documents that were created in Office 2008 for Mac and Office 2007 for Windows.

Another tool that you might want to try  to solve your problem with .docx compatibility issue is the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.0 which converts Open XML files that were created in Office 2008 for Mac or Office 2007 for Windows so that you can open, edit, and save them in earlier versions of Office for Mac.

There are many other third-party tools and web-based application that provides you with the file format conversion. You might try Googling it if you want explore more.
