OpenXML/ODF Translator Add-in for Office

March 5, 2008 by Jerome Locson

Found another productivity tool that works to translate OpenXML/ODF, an Add-in for Office. This is a project in SourceForge.net, an ODF Converter:

The goal for this project is to provide translators to allow for interoperability between applications based on ODF (OpenDocument) 1.0 standards and Microsoft OpenXML based Office applications.

Last time I posted about Sun ODF Plugin for Microsoft Office. And yes, this is yet another ODF Converter with OpenXML support as well.

I just installed the Sun ODF Plugin 1.1 for use with Microsoft Office 2003 and don’t have much trouble. It is somewhat annoying when the “splash screen” for Sun ODF Plugin shows up in MS Word 2003 ‘while’ opening a .odt file. However, the plugin is very unobtrusive otherwise.

In Excel 2003, PowerPoint 2003, Publisher 2003 the plugin shows up as a toolbar. In Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher an ODF file can’t be opened or saved otherwise. In Word 2003 the plugin shows up only in the “save as” or “open” windows. Too bad Sun can’t make it as stealthy as in MS Word 2003.
