Organizatonal Bailout – Now You Are Out of a Job

As I consider the bailout we have witnessed for this country, my thoughts are on those who may be affected by the foolishness of our elected officials and those on wallstreet who out of greed and selfishness allowed some of our major banks to mishandle finances. As I consider who will be out of a job when the dust settles, I think about this mental picture I always kept in the back of mind when I was in corporate america building my career. Here’s the picture – “You find yourself standing outside in the middle of the day with boxes in your hand. Typically you never see the sun outside unless you are on vacation, because when you went to work it was early in the morning and you rarely left the office until the sun has gone down. Now you are outside, at about 2:00 pm and that is unsual. The only thing it could mean is that you are no longer employed.”

This picture was real to me, because like most people today, I have been laid off and I have also chosen to leave an organization for one reason or another. But in the world we live today, bailout is the new term, or at least for the purposes of this post. Your organization has found itself in need of a bailout. In order to hope to sustain the organization, they have to make major cuts, and you have found yourself on the short end of the stick. You are out of a job. Now what?

In a yucky economy, the “now what” question is painful to ponder because the economy stinks and no one is hiring. I will grant you that the economy stinks one point, however let me tell you something I know for a fact – There are still organizations out there hiring! That is the reason I am writing this post. I am not interested in writing a doomsday post – that adds to the mental stress and or trip you may be dealing with right now. There are jobs out there!! Let me say it again for emphases, just to get it into your brain, there are still jobs available in the marketplace. Where are they you may ask?

Let me answer the question this way – the jobs are in the hidden job market. “Where is that you may ask?” The hidden job market is connected to the people you know. Do not waste all day and night searching for jobs on the internet. You may get lucky and actually land one of those jobs after 1 or 2 years. The jobs that are plentiful are not in the open job market. They are hidden. They are available through your network. The only person who can work your network is you. That is your fulltime job, if you are looking for a job. Don’t sit and wallow in self-pity in front of the television. Get up and go talk to some people you know. Connect and allow others to open their network to you. More to come on this topic!
