OS deathmatch: Leopard vs. Vista
Apple is claiming that Vista copies a lot from Apple’s OS X, we all know that. Last week both Lifehacker and Paul Thurrott wrote a piece about this and explore if Apple isn’t copying too. I’m not in the position to be 100% objective about Vista, but I think both companies have ’stolen’ ideas from one another now and then. But it’s a good read, so check it out!
Oh, and also check these three video’s from Vista, Linux and Leopard.

look the truth is that windows vista is going to get well on windows users and mac leopard is going to get on mac users see im a windows user with wista beata on 1hd and xp on the 2 hd and its fine and i sometims use slax (linx)
The most pathetic part was (after i watched the WDDC clipping) that steve (jobs) claims that microsoft has copied Mac Os X is a claim for which the substantiation was given as ical; mail; safari RSS; and spotlight….
that is so pathetic that such a big company even went out to claim all that…
well i will give credit to these guys ….
for i while i was planning to go for a mac but this presentation just changed my idea and made my resolve not to change sides…
the next thing that steve jobs will say is that
he was the first to use a computer in his office and bill (Gates) is copying him…. GIVE ME A BREAK…
MR. Jobs not everyone can or will buy your PC to run a lame OS…
so wat that it doesnt crash and so wat that the viruses are about NIL…all that matters to me is that atleast microsoft knows their customers needs and also that they are willing to provide all that is under the sky and worth the usage for the customer… not to keep him complaining!@!
All in all i must say is that OS X was the futures’ OS now but vista is the future(& its here to stay)
I have been listening to and reading about the Vista v. Tiger argument, and I would like to add a couple of observations. disclaimer- I have used Mac for 20 years, and have never bought an upgrade. I just use what they give me.
Windows enthusiasts tend to see
1. a beautiful presentation as a negative.
2. an integrated system that simply works as inflexibility.
3. the ability to play with the hardware as more fun than playing with the software.
I teach history, and see Windows as Henry Ford’s Model T Ford that one could attach saws, mixers, shellers and other tools to, but that did not upgrade for more than a decade. “You can get any color you want, as long as it’s black,” is more a Windows world- uncreative and inflexible. But once good quality cars were produced that were comfortable and reliable, Ford had to upgrade or die. Hence Vista.
When I was a kid my friend’s dad was a WWII vet technician who sat on the floor and played with his LaFayette radio kits; I think he would have loved Windows for the 13 million different combinations of plugs, wires and chips he could play with. My father spent his time listening to the radio.
Cute story- as I was “working” on iPhoto I noticed a button for “slideshow”, so I made one of vacation pix. With a sound track of any song in my iTunes. Then I saw I could make it into a movie, so I did. Then I saw I could make THAT into a DVD, so I did.
Yeah, I was just wasting my time “playing”- except now I can make a resource for my kids just by clicking about six times and letting the computer work in the background.
Better yet, the kids can, too. And have- of the Depression, WWII, urban growth, etc.
And I have not used a nickel of outside software, because I’m just a Mac guy who uses what’s on the computer. (That’s not exactly true- I bought iWork and Quicktime Pro for a total of under $100.)
But I did have the worst reported disaster reported for Apple- my new MacBook suddely began shutting off.
So I called the provider of EVERY piece of hardware and software on my computer- Apple- and drove six miles to their store. It was fixed in six days. no questions.
See? I never had to learn how to make a computer work- it just does. And I do what I want to do, and get “creative” because i am tempted to. But when my Windows friends start using technical acroymns I don’t impress them at all, because I don’t know computers.
Like most people.
Enjoy your Vista. How much is it again?
Umm,Priyank…have some Kool-Aid will ya? Geeezzz!
Remember… Microsoft “stole” the graphical user interface AND the mouse from Apple…. who first stole it from Xerox. The whole “idea” theft is bogus.
Apple will always be a second rate competitor to Microsoft for the simple fact that they (used to at least) fill a niche market. They have nothing compared to the development initiative from Microsoft (.net) and with that comes limited usability of large corporations. People work on windows at work so naturally they’ll be more comfortable with windows at home.
People complain about how insecure Windows is. Look at the comparison of Firefox and IE in the past few years. It’s all a matter of percentage of users. If 90% of the world uses something, don’t you think hackers would try to target the largest possible audience? Notice how there have been Firefox exploits now that it has become a more popular browser…?
And besides.. why are the apple fanbois posting on a windowsvistaweblog.com :-P
Missionaries have to go to other cultures to promulgate the Truth. (Humor? no?)
And I do realize that the interests of those commited to each will make converts rare.
My point was simply that I don’t care what Windows, Vista or Microsoft ever do; I am happy in my delusion that i can do whatever I want easier and more reliably in my little fantasy world. So ignore me. Your reality rules.
(Would you argue that Chevy is better than Lexus based on numbers? That Whoppers are better than scallops?)
Hey, BTW- “Funny”- You’re having a comparison of Vista and Tiger and Mac fans aren’t welcome? What fun is that? Take advantage of the opportunity to convince me I’m wrong.
Sup Fellow Computer Nerds!
I remember in the past my first ever computer was the Packard Bell piece of crap. Of course I loved it at the time, but the frequent crashes during Windows setup ticked me off (i was just a brat back then but still seeing an error with some “Beast” program popping up all the time was irritating).
I advanced into the next generation: enter the Pentium III/Early Pentium IV days. I learned to love Windows 98 for its simplicity. Then I loved Windows 2000 for its stability and higher security. Later on I eventually learned to accept Windows XP, disregarding all the comments ppl had. However, during this generation, one fact remained: Windows XP could work on a computer that was built for less than a hundred bucks (considering you used a few pre-existing parts: monitor, keyboard, mouse, maybe even hard drive; if you have to buy the stuff it’ll set ya back what 60 bucks?).
Now, with the advancement of graphics into the PCI-E and SLI days, I find that no “decent” system can be bought in less than four hundred dollars without “quality parts.” I expect to play games on Windows dammit!
With the release of Vista I see it fitting that the computer requirements Vista puts forth (plus its separate price) no idiot would want to buy a new os “just for looks.” In that sense a Mac would be waaay better. I remember my Photoshop Class; there were nothing but Macs!
I don’t have anything against Macs, but I certainly do against the arrival of Vista. Once Vista arrives, even Windows XP will be considered “dated” and next thing you know Microsoft’s gonna get lazy on XP. Vista’s something nobody’s really ready for YET. If Vista is released, here’s the future (quite realistically speaking):
All office/school computers wishing to upgrade to the latest computers will switch to Macs/Mac OSes simply because they’re cheaper and run on Intel hardware now (very smart move Apple!). Only true hardcore gamers will bother running Windows, and even then they’ll probably stick to XP for another few years simply because the GUI sucks up all the available resources. Now there’s really one thing left for Apple to kick Microsoft’s arse, and that’s adding application support. While third party software made by unknown people may sound pointless, major software not existing in the Macs today (especially games) will definitely gain an advantage. However, since Macs are still UNIX based, this has a long road ahead. Even so, Apple will rise in the computer market if the future rolls out as I’ve stated. Heck worst to worst Microsoft will have virtually no progress with Vista and they’ll (again this is worst case scenario) scrap it. But that’s a miracle we’re talking about.
Hope you find my thinking useful.
Bill
Note to Microsoft: Focus more on your resource management and DirectX (including performance options I ran CS 1.6 in DirectX mode on my FX 5200 and it was STILL laggy)
bill gates has got great marketing strategy
steve jobs has got great innovative technology
who wins?
THE MACINTOSH OF COURSE!
Well, I would like to say that Macs are more reliable in software and easier to use. Windows (XP) computers are harder to use, but they can do more. The new Vista that’s coming out has the “Gadgets”, which they have absolutely stole from Mac OSX. They also have “search”, which is very similar to the Apple Spotlight. Now they’re also starting to have small apps such as iCal, but just a different name. I went on the internet and found a moron talking about the differences, and said:” windows did not copy Apple in the widgets because they are called gadgets. See? Widgets, gadgets, widgets, gadgets.” The overall look is the same, they don’t take up much RAM etc.
I’d like to go back to Tom’s comments, because my macbook pro broke recently, it was the hook. They asked me what happened to it, and fixed it within a week. But I would like to make a note, Macs’ software is very reliable, but the hardware is OK. PCs, although software is not as reliable, can have better hardware because you can create your own PC. But you do have to buy your own parts if you are to do that.
I will support mac, but I won’t diss PC, because I was also a long time PC user. Macs are very reliable, smooth in performance, and that is why I would stick with mac.
Ok, Mac OS X is a million times better than any windows os that could ever be made. Viruses? Crashing? Pain in the ass frozen apps? Who needs that. You won’t have that on a mac. Don’t listen to these idiots because I currently own a desktop PC and a Macbook Pro. I know both OS’s well and I can tell you I like Mac OS X a lot better. The only reason I use windows is for compatibility with certain apps and because i’m a big gamer.
Ok, first of; all you windows users please see this.

Second of all, I have been a windows user for 17 years, and I have used Dell, HP, Compaq, and Gateway systems…and for all you dim witted gamers out there, I was also the once proud owner of an Alienware Area-51 system as well, so shut it before you start.
As an individual who knows both sides well at this point, i can clearly say that comparing a Windows PC to a Mac is like comparing a 5 speed bicycle (lol, windows) to a Mercedes SLR (Mac). Most windows users out there (95%) talk bad about Macs because of their past experiences with OS9 and previous…and never OSX. This is quite understantable, as being a current 15″ Macbook Pro user, i can say the same thing…the GUI in OS9 was just not the intuitive, nor attractive. But that was OS9, and its obvious that your basing this previous judgement on the latest OSX operating system as well as Macs in general. Dont deny this people (windows users), I’ve even asked several of my windows friends and they could only relate to the OS9, and once they see me using Tiger, their jaw literally drops dead, and then the question pops out…”damn, is that really a Mac?” I know for a fact many of you windows users can relate to this. Secondly, for the windows genius (not) in one of the previous posts who said to try putting a 7950GTX on a Mac..IDIOT, you can order a Mac Pro with a Radeon X1900XT 512MB (for extreme gaming) or an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB (for extreme working. So do some research next time before you are proven wrong. Who the hell said the modern Macs cant play games? My Intel Core Duo (2.16GHz) MacBook Pro with 2GB DDR2 ram and a Radeon X1600 can blaze through FarCry, Call of Duty 2, Doom 3, and Need for Speed Most wanted like cutting butter with a knife.
Moreover, try opening up 20 programs at once in windows and ill guarantee that 19/20 times your PC will freeze or say ” Your virtual memory is low..windows is increasing your page file size”, yea i know you windows users know what im talking about…or how about that “so and so is currently not responding and needs to close down..we are (microsoft) sorry for the inconvinence. and right after that the screen comes up that says to report the error to microsoft..whom by the way dont even know who you are nor give the slightest crap of your PC’s condition. You cannot say im talking BS here, because i was once like you guys and gals, and i made that heavenly switch to a Mac, wherby life seems so much easier now. Believe it or not…having been a Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 user…i can clearly say that the OSX Tiger operating system ahead of windows by years on end, and that Tiger is definately on par with Vista already, Let alone Leopard.
Next, lets talk about style..this is a no brainer, and one that especially makes my Bicycle (windows) Vs Mercedes SLR (mac) ever so true. Its simple, and all you windows users out there (100% of you) know that Macs turn heads no matter where or what angle they are in. Their design from the entire package down to the operating system is extremely stylish, slick, but remarkably simple, yet highly advanced. and then comes PC’s..some of whom are extremely bulky (my Alienware experience)and a downright ugly operating system GUI. Yes i know that this can be changed..but its the fact that Microsoft had not implemented a nice OS (without copying Apple like they did in Vista) in the first place to begin with.
Finally, and this is the best part…Us Mac users can run both OSX as well AS Windows, so we can have the best of both worlds (as if windows actually has anything to offer that OSX dosent, which is unlikely) at full speeds; But windows users cannot do the same without going through a complicated hack process, and even still your hardware is not fully supported by your OS, so your at a constant alert of a system crash!
And there you have it..All windows users know that the OSX Tiger and Leopard (and even the previous OSX’s) are beautiful and powerful..but like they say, the first stage is denial, and after Apple proves Microsoft wrong (which they increasingly are btw)you’ll know which is better and which is crap (hint hint ;)
I have a 6 year old Powerbook G4 running Tiger and although the graphics are not as good as modern day PC’s or the newest macs, Tiger still runs way faster than any PC I have used. This is just more proof that Mac OSX does not only run faster than Windows on new machines, but it blows Windows away on older machines as well.
ok. To add on to iJon’s comments, We, the mac users are both experienced with Mac OS X and Windows. And yes, we have experienced Vista(Due to work in office). We definitely know what we are talking about when we say Mac is better than Windows. You guys who are using Windows, Please Use a mac for at least a month or so before u start bashing Mac with absolutely no idea what is going on in the Mac world.
If you windows users want to talk about windows having cool GUI effects in Vista, please check out Ubuntu on youtube. Its free and it runs on PC. Even Mac can’t beat Ubuntu when it comes to GUI effects.
I was a Wind-ohs user for over 8 years, 3 years ago I bought a little Powerbook G4 just to try out this whole Mac v’s PC thing, you know so i could have some authority on the matter.
Result? My PC’s sat gathering dust. There was nothing I couldn’t do on a PC that I could do better with a Mac. Fact. Simple as.
My workflow increased using a Mac, so much so, increased profits paid for a Powermac G5 which increased profits to buy a Powermac G5 Quad, which increased profits and so I bought a maxed out Mac Pro and a new MacBook Pro 17″ Core 2 Duo.
I haven’t used a Windows based PC in all that time.
I was curious about Vista so went and tried out some Vista systems. Yuk. Nicer looking Windows I’ll admit, but there was nothing to tempt me to switch back, especially when all the branded systems are running the 32-bit version of Vista (why have 64-bit CPU’s in the system and run a 32-bit OS? Ahh yeah keeps costs down).
I found Vista to be slow and very power hungry. Mac OSX is faster, less power hungry and simply a joy to use.
Windows users buy a Mac and run Windows, it does run better than on a PC and at least from the outside at least, people will think you have more sense than you obviously do (running Windows on a Mac – yeesh) as you’re running a Mac, Mac users will buy Mac’s because they know better
One thing is for certain : mac sure appeals to people that like to talk (or would that be that like to hear themselves talk), whether they be teachers or other…
“Experienced Vista due to work in office” ? :-) what business would be foolish enough to deploy a new OS (whatever the OS) in the weeks following it’s release ? A bike and a Mercedes ? Wow.. what a comparison, why not a 20 foot yacht and a life buoy while you’re at it :-) ROFL !
hi im a pc user looking at buying a macbook. ive just got one problem with macs, the compatibility. could anyone tell me if there are any emulators out there so i could run windows xp programs (mainly blitz3d and anim8or)
What isn’t compatible? In the 90s and early 2000s, they weren’t, but since OS X, Apple has re-written all it’s codes, and now virtually anything is compatible, or there is a Mac equivalent. But yes, you can download something called Boot Camp from . This allows you to run either Windows Xp or Vista on your Mac, in addition to Mac OS X. You must first have the Windows software first though! You have to have the install/restore CDs or (DVDs). You have to purchase those, unless you already have them.
The problem: Apple Computers don’t get viruses because of OS X software. Installing Vista or Xp will enable your computer to get a virus.
Also, MAKE SURE YOU GET A COMPUTER WITH ENOUGH MEMORY! I recommend Xp over Vista!!!!!! Vista hogs up TONS of space, and there are many querks!! You are really looking at installing 2 different operating systems on 1 computer. But honestly, what is the program(s) you want to run? I’m sure there’s a Mac version that’s better. Not just a Mac lover talking here, they really do have better and newer apps.
Now for all you PC users:
First of all, this war began in the 80s & early 90s when the first user interface came out. Apple Computers Inc. came out with the first user interface, the first Operating System, (OS). But for Apple, people would still be be using MS-DOS!!!!! That’s right: Microsoft stole that entire idea. And here again today, Vista is a copycat of OS X!!!!! The sidebar on Vista was taken from Apple’s Dashboard concept. The icons that preview the contents of files are taken from Apple’s Quick Look, and the all new Finder. Some may argue that Vista came out first, so Apple’s Leopard copies Vista. NOT TRUE!!!! Apple had demos and previews out before Vista. Apple had information out first. Apple has been in development of Leopard WAY before Microsoft with Vista.
So, question: If PCs are sooo great, and they meet ALL of EVERYBODY’S needs, why do they need to create a copycat of another platform? And since they chose Apple’s OS X to copy, that must mean that people are demanding the features that Macs have. And If PCs are sooo great, and they meet ALL of EVERYBODY’S needs, why is software being created so that you can run Mac OS on a PC? hmmmmm….
Final thought for you PC users: SERIOUSLY NOW…..what can your PC do that my Mac can’t?
For me is very simple:
Leopard (Apple) – Simple, Elegant,Original, Powerful.
Vista (Microsoft)- Ugly, Complicated, copycat, Powerfull.
Which one you think would be the election of an intelligent people?
