Other uses for social networking sites for business

Most of the time I am focused on how to use social networking site to advertise yourself, your product, your company, and accomplishing various goals. Beyond using social networking sites for this there are other features that small business owners or professionals can use these sites.

1) Connecting with old friends, classmates, and co-workers- Yeah this sounds obvious, but beyond adding people via e-mail social networking sites also let you search by schools and places of work. Using these search features will allow you to browse through people that you may have gone to school with or worked with. Reestablishing these contacts is never a bad move to make, you never know what opportunity awaits you by simply taking a couple of seconds out to look for these people.

2) You can use it as an external company site- If your company doesn’t have a website, MySpace and other social networking sites can act as an inexpensive way of creating a web presence. The Vandalia Lounge in Charleston views MySpace as a virtual bulletin board, where they can update the entertainment schedule, announce specials, and will soon be highlighting certain employees.

3) You can use it as an internal company site- With scheduling features, bulletin boards available in groups, blogs, and bulletin posts, this can be an easy place to disseminate information to employees.

Social networking sites can be used in various forms, it is just about determining what you want to accomplish with them.

I’ve used myspace to connect with old classmates. Even have gotten information on my up and coming ten year reunion. It’s also a good way to reconnect with those people that you might have not talked to back in the day, but now want to talk to.

I want to ask my cousin if I can feature her beauty salon in a myspace page. I can go around and add woman from the area. It would be a great way to get the word out.

I found so many of my old friends on Myspace. People I fell out of touch with in high school, college, and all that. I moved around a lot so it has been so nice to get back into contact with them. Now I am starting to use it for business networking and hope I can do a lot more with it in the future.
