Panasonic announced their latest “breakthrough” today; their Blu-Ray drives for PCs are now down to 9.5mm. They were previously at 12.7mm which made the selection of laptops capable of the drives very small and were mainly featured in thicker laptops. Blu-Ray discs can be written to at speeds up to 2x, in addition to DVD and CD read and write capabilities, so we don’t leave any (previous) format out. As Panasonic announced this, Toshiba was quick to turn around and say that HD-DVD drives can be dwindled down to only 7mm thin. Look for the drives to be shown at CES in January of 2008.
