Parker Repeats History

June 23, 2008 by Lyndsey D'Arcangelo

Candace Parker became only the second woman to ever dunk during a WNBA game last night, following the footsteps of her LA Sparks teammate, Lisa Leslie.

Parker had dunked a couple of times during her college career at Tennessee, so it was only a matter of time before she dunked in a pro basketball game.

The Sparks won, beating the Indiana Fever 77 – 63. LA has a record of 9-3, leading the West Division.

Parker finished the game with 10 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and four assists. She’s a beast. Is it any wonder why she chose not to return to Tennessee for her senior season???

Here’s the dunk courtesy of YouTube, in case you missed it!

The big questions, at least as I see it, is whether this will help the WBNA become a legit pro sport. From what I understand, the NBA essentially subsidizes the WNBA by, among other things, requiring the TV channels that air NBA games to also air WNBA games. Also, attendance at games is pretty abysmal. None of the teams have an average attendance above 10,000 and one of the teams average attendance is less than 4,000.

I totally agree Fern. The WNBA needs more stars like Parker to raise the game up a notch and attract viewers. I wonder how much the LA Sparks attendance has spiked since she was drafted.
