From what I understand, the NBA essentially subsidizes the WNBA by, among other things, requiring the TV channels that air NBA games to also air WNBA games. Also, attendance at games is pretty abysmal. None of the teams have an average attendance above 10,000 and one of the teams average attendance is less than 4,000.
