Ask any college basketball fan who the most successful coach in college basketball history is and you might hear names like Bobby Knight, Adolph Rupp, Mike Krzyzewski or Dean Smith thrown into the mix.
But the truth is that best winning record in history title doesn’t belong to a man. It belongs to a woman.
Pat Summit has reached an incredible milestone that most coaches, male or female, could only dream of. She needs only one win to become the first coach in women’s and men’s Division I history to win 1,000 games.
Summit’s overall record is an impressive 999-186. Bobby Knight sits comfortably in second place with a 902-371 winning record.
Summit was only 21 when she was given the head-coaching job at the University at Tennessee. Now at the age of 56 and 999 wins later, history is about to be made.
We don’t know when Summit will retire or how many more wins she has in her, but we do know that she’s set a record that will surely stand for many more years to come.
