Phil Hellmuth Covers The Ocean

I have never heard Phil Hellmuth admit to weak poker play on his behalf or even just shutting up when he’s been had.  Today’s video shows Sammy Farha running him over with Q6 of diamonds.  Farha flopped a queen and Hellmuth caught a jack.  Farha ends up talking Phil into a call which I thought was somewhat of a tell.  I may not have been able to sense it live, but on the video it obviously does become a situation where Hellmuth could have taken information had he been paying attention.

Farha bemoans the fact that Phil has shown weakness so he “has to” raise.  He raises another $2,000 on the river after catching a 6 to finish with two pair.  The discussion afterwards makes Hellmuth look worse.  He declares that he said to himself before the tournament that Farha was going to play hands he wasn’t supposed to and either go busted or eliminate everyone.  Ok so now we know Sammy is either going to play good or he’s going to play bad.

Then, Phil Hellmuth continues to rattle on, egged on by Mike Matusow’s declaration that that was a bad call.  You know the more I see of Matusow, I’m coming to think he’s not that bad a player.  Straight playing ability, he has a lot of talent.  If he can ever master his emotions, he would be a bigger contender more consistently.  When I watch Matusow go up against the elite pros, I always feel like he’s a big name but not really in the match.  Kind of like when Macho Man would wrestle Hulk Hogan for the belt.

Anyways, back to Hellmuth.  He eventually blurts out he thought the 6 on the river was what hit Sammy.  He was grasping for straws here.  It really made no sense given the way the hand played out.  Sometimes you need to let your ego sit on the sidelines Phil.  Actually, a lot of times.  Hellmuth just looked silly on this hand.  He should have blown up at himself.
