Phil Hellmuth vs Dwan NBC Heads Up
By popular comment, here’s Tom Dwan vs Hellmuth at the NBC Heads Up Poker Championship:
This is great for so many reasons. First off, the way Phil has to make a big deal of it when he calls with Aces, then stands up and says it again, just begging everyone in the room to see him and acknowledge what a master he is (wow, you found aces heads up, good job). Walking around all coy and proud of himself preflop. Seriously, dude, check yourself. No one cares. You are the equivalent of a morning radio personality. You are not ‘famous’ famous.
Then starting in with the ’son’. No more than 3k with two tens? Come on. That might be true of Hellmuth’s playing style, but did you see the Brunson vs Farha match? They were all in almost every other hand. There’s no fault in being all in preflop heads up with any big pair, though some players prefer to slow down obviously. I like to play slower heads up, but if I have a big pair, odds are I’m in it, especially when I’m the one moving in and not calling.
Haha, even the announcer says, “Hey, that’s poker right?”
Phil, you are a turd.
Phil and Mike Matusow always celebrate early. it is a sign of immaturity in my opinion. I mean Phil looks more nervous then Dwan on the flop. Dwan should be acting like Phil and vice versa. Dwan is the freaking 21 year old.
Another thing that I love about this clip is that Phil is stating that online play is nothing like real live play on national tv meanwhile Phil is the face behind Ultimate Bet.

Haha true. I think the way Phil talks on the commercial where he wrecks the car is grounds enough to drop him as a sponsor. Gross.
This clip is a classic on why Phil is such an arrogant moron. Dwan indeed was the one acting like the older statesman. Phil is right about one thing though….online poker is indeed VERY different than live play. However, it’s not different in the light that he cast it. Dwan pushed with the 10-10 and when he saw Phil’s A-A he looked like someone who has been there, done that. Which as an online pro he probably has hundreds of times. To him as the online pro this was no big deal at all. Phil on the other hand is acting like this is the apocalypse that he would DARE shove his whole stack with that hand. As the prototypical live player he whines and moans about how the play of the online player is in his words “horrible”.
Guess what Phil–you aren’t all that. Bracelets and all, you aren’t all that. I’d take either Chan or Brunson over you in a three way showdown of WSOP bracelet leaders.
Yeah, it’s ridiculous and he’s only saying that because he feels dumb for losing in the first round. The guy just can’t be a person. His head has expanded too wide.
As far as how good he is, I do think Phil is a killer in tournaments. I’d take him over Doyle. Probably not Chan though.
I’ll take Allen Cunningham for tournament play. I think he is just as good as phil and much more humble.
No doubt on that. Cunningham is a machine, and hardly says a word. Can’t beat that.
He just won some major event somewhere, I forget which one.
He won the WSOP circuit event at Ceasers.
A lot of the pros don’t attend these circuit events because of no tv time which I think is vain.

Allen has also made more money in tourney play then phil and has not been playing nearly as long as him.

Cunningham is a machine indeed. And if he said any less he’d be busted by dealers for not stating his bet intentions…that’s about all he says during poker tourneys. He eventually might catch Phil in terms of bracelets, Cunningham is about 10 years younger than Hellmuth if I’m not mistaken.
Cunningham is actually 3rd all time in tourney money, only behind that luckbox Jamie Gold and Joe Hachem. So in that regard he is far superior to Hellmuth.

The guy also plays all forms of poker and does very well.
Phil hasn’t really adjusted his play since 1980. NLHE only.
I guess you could argue that Phil is better at NLHE but I don’t really believe that.
He is good. Very good but not the greatest.
Right, Cunningham has bracelets in Seven Card Stud as well as Pot Limit Hold Em.
Hellmuth is 4th on the all time list but again Cunningham has passed him in a fraction of the time it took Hellmuth to amass eight figures.
FWIW, Gold was a luckbox, but I don’t think Hachem is.
Jereme has convinced me that Gold actually has some skills, though they all relate to psychology more than cards. He could not miss a hand at WSOP, and his play at High Stakes afterward has fully cemented in my mind how much he sucks.
Hachem, yeah, he can actually play some.
yeah I do not believe Jamie has actual poker skills but his psychology game is better then any one else i’ve ever seen
the guy can talk you in a hand, out of a hand and/or minimize the loss of money in a hand when he knows he’s beat all by reading his opponent and persuading them to his desired result.
That is a valid and valuable skill in live poker. One which is overlooked too frequently.
Hachem can play, so can Raymer but neither have followed up strongly. But now they have the money to get the experience to be at the level of Brunson, Ivey, etc.
Moneymaker should just invest in cars or something. Poker is not his forte.
I don’t know, guys. The comments made by Dwan were pretty damn arrogant. Phil made Dwan put in all of his chips, that’s why Phil’s a world champion with…13 bracelets, or whatever. He knew Dwan would think that he’s just making a move. Tom Dwan said it’s a “standard” play. I agree Jamie Gold isn’t the greatest player, but Jamie Gold has laid down pocket queens preflop in heads up play… he knew he was beaten… is that standard play, too, Dwan? Seriously… no such thing as standard play. There’s too much in the game for anything to be considered standard. Dwan telling Hellmuth to learn to play No Limit Heads up… definitely not an elder statesman remark. More like an arrogant prick remark. Granted, Dwan’s made millions and he’s a great player, but he comes off as sort of an asshole in this clip and in general.
