Philip Rivers throws for 3 TDs

If there was any doubt about Phillip Rivers ability to play quarterback in the absence of Drew Brees, then that doubt was completely dispelled this last Sunday.

His team was down by 21 points at the half to the Cincinnati Bengals. Rivers completed a 42 point second half with a shovel pass to Brandon Manumaleuna for the game winning touchdown. The final score was 49 – 41.

Rivers was 24 for 36 for 337 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tomlinson added 4 touchdowns.

More than that, his ability to lead has grown in leaps and bounds.

For most of us, the loss of Drew Brees spelled doom for the chargers this year. They would somehow have to live on their defense.

Other teams were going to stack the line to stop LaDainian Tomlinson . They were going to force Phillip Rivers to beat them with the pass.

Rivers has responded with 13 touchdowns leading his team to a 7 – 2 record.

The Chargers victory upstaged a brilliant performance by Carson Palmer who had 31 completions and 440 yards and 3 touchdowns.

It also negated a great breakout performance by Chad Johnson. He had 260 yards receiving, which is a new record for the Bengals. Chad also had 2 touchdowns.

This game helped San Diego keep pace with Denver in the AFC West. Denver beat Oakland in a close game 17 – 13.

The beauty of this victory is that the next game is against Denver and will be a great test of just how far Phillip Rivers has come as an NFL quarterback.
