Picking good passwords is important, but is that easy to do?

LifeHacker highlights Strong Password Generator as an easy way to create extremely strong password.  Strong passwords are ones that are very hard to crack with brute force.  Of course strong passwords are also terribly hard to remember, SPG gives you a little mnemonic key.  There is a big problem with SPG, though, they include characters that are very often not allowed as part of passwords (like ( [ { & * ).  So while the tool is cool, I can’t recommend it.  Now, what I can recommend is the Ultra secure password generator  Why?  Because it gives you choice.  There are three very long boxes of random characters.  It doesn’t create a password for you, it gives you a choice that you can pull from.  You can refresh to get new characters, but really, you can get dozens of passwords from one box.  Of course these are also very hard to remember, users will likely change them, but at least you tried.

  1. Tris,

We at StrongPasswordGenerator.com read your article with great interest. You raised a very important point about the site not giving users the choice of omitting symbols from their password.

We’re pleased to announce that StrongPasswordGenerator.com has been upgraded and now features a simple checkbox which users can clear if they wish to generate a password without symbols. Try it out at http://StrongPasswordGenerator.com – it’s still free, as always!

Thank you for bringing attention to this issue! Enjoy using the site!

    Regards,
    StrongPasswordGenerator.com
